Sirach 6.24-28

“Put your feet into Wisdom’s fetters, and your neck into her collar.  Bend your shoulders and carry her, and do not fret under her bonds.  Come to her with all your soul, and keep her ways with all your might.  Search out and seek, and she will become known to you; and when you get hold of her, do not let her go.  For at last you will find the rest she gives.”

Reflection

“Come to me…take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11.28-30)

Your restrictions, O Christ, lead to true freedom and rest.  This is a seeming paradox that is more easily believed when lived.  Yet how can it not be so?  You are Truth.  The Word is all truth, glory and splendor.  And our souls have been created to glory in it.  There is one food only for our souls, one light – the Word.  Incarnate to teach us, incarnate to suffer for us, incarnate to bind himself to us.  O soul, how can you not know your dignity, or forget your destiny, when your God, for whom you were created, took on your very own flesh and blood – your very own nature – to love you all the more intimately?  To what price shall we affix a soul?
