For Moses’ faithfulness and meekness the Lord consecrated him, choosing him out of all humankind. He allowed him to hear his voice, and led him into the dark cloud, and gave him the commandments face to face, the law of life and knowledge.
Exodus 20.21 – Then Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
Lord, thank you for speaking to us through Moses, giving us your law of life and knowledge. It is a mystery that what we believe to be our vision has to be darkened before we can hear your voice. Yet “we have not drawn near to darkness” (Hebrews 12.18) but rather “to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering…and to God…and to Jesus.” (Hebrews 12.22-24) Why? Because of the mediator, Jesus, who speaks a better word than Abel’s sacrifice (v 24). Christ is the sacrifice and the entrance. His is the word which speaks in our darkness, encouraging us forward to Him. So “let us make sure we do not refuse the one who is speaking” (Hebrews 12.25). For our sake but mostly for the sake of love.
