O God, you have rejected us,
Broken our defenses;
you have been angry; now
restore us!
You have caused the land to
quake; you have torn it
open;
repair the cracks in it, for it is tottering.
You have made your people suffer
hard things;
you have given us wine to drink
that made us reel.
You have broken the defenses of our ego, O Lord. The barren land of our hearts you have torn open and broken its affection for vain and idle pleasures. Repair the cracks, O Lord, filling them in with yourself. Our spirit indeed totters once its worldly supports have been broken. You do this so we might rely solely on you, O Lord, that you be our God and our idols be shattered. We have indeed suffered hard things, believing the world could satisfy us. But having tasted the true wine we stagger and wonder!
