Psalm 16.4

Those who choose other gods increase their sorrows.

Never will I offer their offerings of blood.

Never will I take their name upon my lips.

Reflection

The good Christian constantly weeds his heart, pulling up any seedling which would become rooted and grow into idolatry, which really is adultery.  For it would be spiritual prostitution for the Christian to offer the innermost chamber of his soul to anyone or anything which is not Christ.  He does not heed the Lord's pleading: "Set me as a seal on your heart."  (Song of Solomon 8.6)  In fact he does not seal his innermost heart for his beloved at all, leaving it wide open for the prostitution of his soul and mind to other creatures, to money, to vanity, to all the world's pleasures.  Do not be swift to think that since becoming a Christian you have ended idol worship or are beyond its draw.  Only the heart whose inner chamber is sealed permanently with Christ can discern the attacks of the enemy in this area or sufficiently guard it from the enticements of idolatry in this, our adulterous age.  Only the sealed heart is protected from loving a worldly life.  "Whoever hates his life in this world keeps it safe for life everlasting."  (John 12.25)
