All you who are thirsty
come to the water!
You who have no money,
come, receive grain and eat;
Come, without paying and without cost,
drink wine and milk!
Why spend your money for what is not bread;
your wages for what fails to satisfy?
Heed me, and you shall eat well,
you shall delight in rich fare.
Come to me heedfully,
listen, that you may have life.
I will renew with you the everlasting covenant,
the benefits assured to David.
All you who are thirsty, and who recognize your thirst. Who, at the end of the day are soul-weary. Who have drunk at the shallow pools of “what else” life has to offer. Whose thirst for truth has not been slaked by travels to the depths of the ocean, nor contemplation of distant starts. Who realizes it cannot be fulfilled by any human-only creature. Lift yourself up in hope, for there is a drink which can satisfy. Come to the water!
You who have no money, you who realize your soul’s true food cannot be purchased with your good deeds, who are spiritually bereft, come, receive grain and eat. The true bread has come down from heaven to give life to us all.
Come, without paying, for you do not have to act, or become what you are not, to be admitted by the king into the banquet hall. Come, and it will not cost you, though it may seem like it. You have only to leave behind that fare with which you are accustomed to nourishing yourself and drink and eat real food.
Why spend your money, that is, your energies and attentions, for what fails to satisfy?
Heed the Word, and he will be your satisfaction. Strive for a recollected life; the rich fare of his fruits of joy and peace will accompany you. Listen to him, that you may have life. For the soul, he alone is our Way, Truth and Life.
Do not seek your own clever way. Nor the world’s way. Do not invent your own truth, nor fall sway to the false truths the world professes. Do not cling to your own life, with meekness welcome the implanted Word, that you may die into true Life.
