You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. For "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures forever." That word is the good news that was announced to you. Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation - if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Malice: the desire to injure another person; active ill will or hatred
Guile: insidious cunning, deceit, treachery
Insincerity: feigned or pretended, pretense, hypocrisy, dishonest
Envy: wishing to have the good fortune, possessions, etc. of another person or regarding them with resentment or discontentment
Slander: the spreading of false or malicious statements about a person, intending to injure or defame
All of these exhortations are intended to govern our daily relationships with others as well as our own inner thoughts and desires toward others. We act in those ways out of a desire for revenge for past injuries (thus showing lack of forgiveness), a desire to control or manipulate people and circumstances to put ourselves first (thus showing lack of humility), or a desire to force others to become what they are not (thus showing lack of patience and charity).
We cannot focus our thoughts and desires on more than one thing at once. So to dispel evil desires, long for spiritual things instead. Long to forgive, long to be patient, long to show charity, long to be humble. Let these things dominate your thoughts during daily interactions with others.
