The
conversion of St. Paul - Michelangelo
Paul, originally named Saul, was a Hebrew of the tribe of
Benjamin. He was born at Tarsus and was through birth a free Roman citizen.
He persecuted the early Christians and took part in the stoning of Stephen,
the first Christian martyr.
On the road to Damascus he was struck blind and
experienced a vision that led to his conversion. Afterward he preached to the
Jews but then withdrew to Arabia for one or two years, probably to pray and
reflect on the Scriptures.
He visited Peter in Jerusalem as head of the church and
was later called by Barnabas to go to Antioch. He made several missionary
journeys, wrote many epistles and has been enormously influential in several
key areas in the development of early Christian theology.
In appearance Paul was short, balding, broad-shouldered,
had a large nose and eyebrows that met. He had a thick, gray beard, a fair
complexion and an affable manner. He was also afflicted with an unknown
physical malady. |
