You are God's field, God's building. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.
The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!" His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."
If Jesus became filled with righteous anger over the Jerusalem Temple being turned into a marketplace, with how much greater zeal will he cleanse out our souls if we have given ourselves over to the ways of the world? If he did not tolerate people selling doves in the Jerusalem Temple, will he tolerate any kind of corruption in us, God's living temple?
"Zeal for your house will consume me." We are God's house, and zeal for our salvation literally consumed Jesus on the cross. It was for the Father's temple - us - that Jesus sacrificed himself, even unto death. Love for us consumed him. And it continues to consume him until all the elect are safely in his kingdom and then he will turn us over to the Father with love, having lost none of us except those destined to be lost. Then he will continue to be consumed with love for us, because we will remain the dwelling place of the Spirit and will be all holy, with no more marketplace in us. Jesus proceeds from the Father for all eternity as God's expression of infinite love for us. We are sanctified by our belief, trust and acceptance of that love, like children.
