When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean." He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do choose. Be made clean!" Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
Jesus cleanses the leper and through the leper reaches out to the priests. The miracle is like a vine: reaching out, growing, expanding. How happy the leper. How blessed those who come to believe through his testimony. Jesus gives to teach what they need in order to help them come to believe in his message. If we remain open to God's actions and signs each day we may discern the ways he is reaching out to us. We must not constrict God however. He may be trying to reach us through the testimony of another while our hearts are preoccupied with receiving his healing touch. Or perhaps we are awaiting testimony while Jesus wants to heal our physical infirmity. Let us not define the channel by which we expect God to reach us. Let us rather view ourselves as parched land longing to receive heavenly dew and grace, trusting God to provide it according to what is best for us. And let us not be afraid to give testimony if we are called to do so.
