Matthew 6.25-33

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?  And why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you--you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'  For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Reflection

Jesus reveals the immense tenderness of the Father.  "Your Father knows that you need these basic necessities of life.  Let him provide them for you as he does the rest of creation.  Do not dissipate your energy worrying needlessly about these things.  Instead, spend your energies seeking the Father's kingdom and his holiness."

If this is true about the basic necessities of life what about all those other things that we waste energy worrying about, we who do not need to worry about food and clothing?  We worry about our careers, our relationships, our vacations, our friends and families, our homes, our health, our status and position, our retirement, our money.  If life does not consist of eating and clothing ourselves it most certainly does not consist of those things.

Jesus wants to liberate us.  He wants to free us of our mad pursuit and constant concern for things which it is the Father's position and desire to provide.  He tells us what life does consist of: seeking God's kingdom and his holiness.  Stop the constant interior chatting and worrying.  Calm your mind and soul so the Father may enter in to you and rest in you.  He desires to have an inner relationship with you and through you, shine out onto others.  Will you stop your worrying about useless things this day so you may hear the Father quietly whispering in your heart?  Will you answer love's call to freedom?
