Matthew 4.1-2

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.

Reflection

Jesus goes to work immediately on our behalf, and does not our heart go out to him as we see him head out into the wilderness to do battle with our captor?  It is not just Jesus but the entire Trinity who is involved in mankind's salvation history.  The Trinity was fully present in the prior verses relating Jesus' baptism and is present here now.  It is the Holy Spirit who leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted, and Jesus prays and fasts.  To whom does he fast if not the Father.  This is a mystery: Jesus, who is God, prays and fasts.  But he is able to do so because he shares our human nature and is also a separate person from the Father.

"Led by the Spirit...to be tempted."  I have been led by the Spirit during certain periods of my life.  I have sometimes mistaken this for a permanent vocation instead of for a time and for a purpose.  But looking back I see it was for a purpose and not for life and I am in awe and filled with gratitude at what I received and what was accomplished during those times.

Life as a Christian is a Trinitarian life.  We receive the sustenance and light of the Word, through whom we pray and fast to the Father and we are led by the Holy Spirit.

"Most Holy Spirit, lead us this day to accomplish the will of the Father as we live and spread the message of the Son.  Amen."
