And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
The baptism of Jesus is the inauguration of our baptism, which is through the Holy Spirit just as John prophesied and Jesus promises (Acts 1.5). The Holy Spirit is now present throughout Jesus' ministry.
The Father testifies to the Son before the Son begins testifying the the Father. In every way the revelation of God to man is Trinitarian. It is to this communion of life and love that we are invited. We in particular who have received the baptism of Christ have received the very same Holy Spirit who descended on Christ during his baptism. He remains with us and is present to us. Are we present to him? Let us open our hearts to him today and begin again to let him shine his light of Truth on our minds and hearts, that we discern God's will and give him glory.
The dove is the gentlest of birds. So too the Spirit.
