This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
This is the second of three great comings of Christ. In the first he was carried in the womb of holy Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem in complete hiddeness from the world. Born into a manager he was greeted by the angels with the cry "Glory to God in the highest heaven" (Luke 2.4-14) In the second he enters into Jerusalem as a meek and humble King of Peace, in full knowledge during the height of the cities religious celebration. The meek and poor welcome him by divesting themselves in imitation of him. In Christ's third and final coming he will ride not on a beast of peace but on an animal of war - the horse. He will come in great power to destroy the last of his enemies. The faithful will follow him, clothed in the white purity won through the blood of Christ. (Revelation 19.11-14)
