Matthew 19.27-30

Then Peter said in reply, "Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?"  Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life.  But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

Reflection

Cut away with passion all that keeps you moored to this world and prevents you from sailing away to a life with Christ.  He has freed you from the fear of removing any and all attachments: land, family, house.  But we do not do this with our reward in mind, for Christ says elsewhere: "When you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'" (Luke 17.10)  We do it out of obedience and out of a love which seeks purity.  The reward is incidental to the obedience and love.  But how great is the reward!  All that we have detached ourselves from will be returned to us in superabundance.  How could it be otherwise?  All who receive Christ receive the entire realm.  "You are always with me now, and all that I have is yours, since you did not seek possession of your inheritance in this life like your brother you will dwell safely on high with me for eternity."  (Luke 15.11-32)
