Matthew 11.28-30

"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Reflection

We all have a common enemy and he has no interest in letting our souls rest.  He is the ruler of this world and so he uses this world to accomplish his goal of harrying us with excitements, pleasures and constant distractions and desires.  He does this to such an extent that we now somehow see it as a part of being human to be restless, agitated, always running here and there and, most importantly, being driven by a wistful longing to be what we are not or to accomplish, do, see and have things which are not our lot.  Does any of this fulfill us or bring us peace?  "Peacefulness is a quality for cattle," we say and continue to exhaust our souls.

"Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls."  (Jeremiah 6.16)  The "burden" of Christ is always new, always refreshing.  "Your mercies are new every morning." (Lamentations)  Oh soul, when will you believe this?  When will you humble yourself to become a student of the one who in graciousness beseeches "learn from me and you will find the rest you so desperately long for?"  Trust Christ.  Trust this teaching.  Put it in practice in your own life for a week, for a day.  Then you will discover its truth.  Then you will be like the merchant searching the world over for fine pearls but having come upon the one of great value sold everything he had to buy it.  In time you will arrange and orient your life around learning from Christ.

"One day within your courts are better than a thousand elsewhere." (Psalm 84)
