Luke 21.34-36

"Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap.  For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.  Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Reflection

Jesus, the creator of the human heart and the authority on all things human, tells us our hearts can get weighed down with the worries of this life but we must not let it.  A heart weighed down with worries, with drunkenness and dissipation will not be prepared to receive him during the events of the last days.

Are we in the last days?  We do not know.  But we do know that some of the signs are being fulfilled.  The day may be near.  We must rouse ourselves, cast aside our worries and the many distractions with which we have filled up our lives and prepare our hearts to stand before the Judge.

Christ gives us the remedy for divided hearts and the prerequisite to stand before him: alertness and prayer.
