Luke 14.7-11

When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable.  "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.  But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.  For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Reflection

Seek the lowest place in life.  "Bow humbly under God's mighty hand so that in due time he may raise you up."  Seek the lowest place in life.  Even if life accords you a position of influence, a position of the steam or service, never lowered its over others that see yourself as their servants.

Seek the lowest place at God's banquet table of life, for you are the lowest.  This says nothing of your value, for Christ died that you may live with him.  Rather it speaks to the act of Christ, the God of all, washing the feet of the disciples - the lowest act of all.  He tells us to imitate him, not just in our actions but in our own self regard.

Great peace accompanies the humble, for they have no fear of having overreached their bounds.  They do not love or esteem themselves less, but more.

My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.

Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.

For great is the power of God; by the humble he is glorified.

What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not.

What is committed to you, attend to; for what is hidden is not your concern.

With what is too much for you meddle not, when shown things beyond human understanding. (Sirach 3.17-22)
