The icon of St.
John the Evangelist
from the Dionysiou Monastery, 11th century
John was the son of Zebedee and
Salome and the brother of James the Greater. The two brothers were fishermen.
They received from Christ the honorable title of “sons of thunder.”
It was John
who leaned on Christ’s breast at the Last Supper, and who alone among the
disciples remained at the foot of the cross with Mary.
The emperor
Domitian exiled John to the island of Patmos where he was gifted with the
heavenly Revelation contained in the Apocalypse.
John’s
symbol is that of an eagle, symbolizing the heights to which he rises in the
first chapter of his gospel.
