John 4.23-24

"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

Reflection

The Father seeks worshippers.  Think on that!  The Father not only wants us to worship him but he actively seek souls who will worship him.  Each day, each hour, this very moment God the Father is loose in the world seeking worshipers.  Could this not be part of the Fathers work, for Jesus said "my Father is still working."  (John 5.17)

Why does God the Father seek worshipers?  Because it is right and true.  It is fitting that all creation worship him, for that is why it was made.  This is a view of God considering himself, which is right and true.  But may we not also say that it is out of love for man that he seeks for us to worship him?  This is because we were made to worship him and cannot be happy in any other way.  So it is our happiness God seeks when he draws us to worship him.

And how are we to worship?  "In spirit and truth."  This does not mean an interior type of worship, within ourselves, as though in reference to man's spirit.  No, worshiping in truth means worshiping in and through Christ, who is Truth.  The Father sought true worshipers so he sent his Son in the fullness of time so we may warship truly - in Jesus Christ who is Spirit and Truth.
