John 18.19-21

Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.  Jesus answered, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.  Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said."

Reflection

We speak to God and complain to him that he does not answer us.  He does not speak to us.  So we stop praying, because of so many years of unanswered prayers and unfulfilled requests for signs of his presence in our lives.  We are like the high priest standing before Jesus, demanding that he tell us of himself.  That he reveal himself.

The response Jesus gave then was meant for us now.  "Why do you interrogate me so?  Everything that I have said has been recorded by my disciples for all generations.  Why do you not seek me there?"  So we continue to maltreat the Beloved through our doubts and demands while the holy scriptures, unending source of light, knowledge and God's presence, sits on our shelf collecting dust, if we have a bible at all.

Have we no holy fear of God?  How can we complain that he is a hidden, unknown God who does not show himself in our lives when we have a massive volume of all he has wanted us to know, which forever speaks to us through all generations in the tradition and in the Church?  "How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?" (Hebrews 2.3)
