Revelation 5.11-14

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!"  Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, "To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!"  And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Reflection

It is part of the role of angels to join their voices to ours in prayer and praise, to perfect our poor worship by worshiping with us, thereby lifting the union of all voices to the throne of God who then hears one voice, not many.  If Jesus prayed "that all may be one" it was for the purpose of this single, unified voice of worship before the Father.  Only this complete unity, joined to the Spirit, can offer adequate worship to God.

Think of a magnificent choral piece comprised of many different choir lines of melodies and harmonies.  Our worship is but a frail line of melody.  But when the entire celestial hierarchy joins us the music becomes unified and sublime, and presents itself as one magnificent song of worship before God.  Even so, our part is essential; the angelic choirs need the voice of man and indeed all creation to construct a complete song.

Where does this leave us?  We must never become discouraged at the frailty and brokenness of our worship, because the angels will join and perfect our praise.  Further, in private prayer we must always remember that our dear guardian angel joins his prayer to ours.  No matter how wretched our prayer may seem, as long as our will is that it be sincere, our angel will join his unceasing prayer to it and create a most beautiful fragrance for Jesus.  This new fragrance, created by the union of angelic spirit and human soul, is entirely unique and cannot be reproduced by any other angel or human pair.  Without this union of wills, the worship rising up to God would be lacking this special and unique fragrance and sound.  See to it then that you always remember your angel at your side when at prayer.  Be joyful and do not judge the quality of your worship, because you cannot hear the whole piece.  And view it as a solemn duty to always be at prayer so that your holy and beautiful angel may join his prayer to yours, thus creating that special new music and fragrance for Jesus which cannot be produced by any other.
