Let the believer who is lowly boast in being raised up, and the rich in being brought low, because the rich will disappear like a flower in the field. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. It is the same way with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will wither away.
No one is more lovely than the Virgin Mother of God, nor will anyone ever approach her lowliness:
And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant...He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty." (Luke 1.46-48,53)
Other translations read "in the midst of his pursuits, while he goes about his business, the rich man will fade away." The rich person is the one who does not need or want God because he is getting his fill elsewhere. The Word tells us beyond a doubt that those who do not hunger for God will dry up and wither away. So in the midst of our many daily occupations let us always strive for that recollection which is a sign of our great and deep hunger for God most high, hunger for Him alone and nothing else.
