The Transfiguration - Christ appearing with Moses and Elijah

It is fitting that an image from an important event in Christ’s life appear on a page dedicated to the historical works of the Old Testament.  Jesus Christ is the perfect fulfillment of the Old Testament law, covenants and prophets.

At the Transfiguration Jesus appeared with Moses and Elijah, discussing his imminent death.  The premier historical event of the Old Testament was the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt.  God, through Moses, led them across the Red Sea and the desert into the promised land.

The story of the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt and their wanderings in the desert is an extraordinary event – representative of the liberation of the soul through baptism and its spiritual wanderings during the course of its life as a Christian in the world.

Here are but a few examples:

The crossing of the red sea – foretelling of life through the waters of baptism

Desiring the fleshpots of Egypt – temptations to return to the world once liberated as a Christian

“Water from the rock” – the rock was split open and water gushed out.  The saving water of life gushed out of the side of Christ once he was struck.

The seraph serpent in the desert – “..and just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe in him may have life”

And many, many others.  Exodus 12-20 is recommended.  Also see here.
