This is a historical pattern for the Christian seeking repentance. Notice the progression:
I. Recognition of our sin and idolatrous nature
II. Rediscovery of the Word, seeking the voice of God within it
III. Solemn renewal of our baptismal promises
IV. Embracing the church and sacraments
V. Going forth to engage the enemy, even to the very plain of Megiddo, the place of Armageddon
There can be a "macro-renewal" where we step back and take stock of the entire direction our life is going. There can also be a "micro-renewal" where the steps outlined can be renewed each day. Pope John Paul II has said in Veritatis Splendor that "man is constantly tempted to turn his gaze away from the living and true God in order to direct it toward idols." Which idols have I set up? Work, food, drink, drugs, sex, entertainment, or "the cares, riches and pleasures of life" which have the disastrous effect of choking the action of the Word in our lives (Luke 8.140 Perhaps even an excessive concern for my own bodily health and welfare. A very practical way this plays out is ensuring we take time each day to exercise but not to pray. Or not rising early each day for prayer out of concern for how much sleep we are getting. Or perhaps we embrace entertainment to the degree that when we try to pray we are filled with interior noise - the death of recollection. All of these can be "micro idols."
